AI-OGC: Artificial Intelligence for Online Genetic Counseling

How can artificial intelligence support genetic counseling while simultaneously giving patients faster access to expert advice? This question is at the core of AI-OGC (AI-based Online Genetic Counseling), a new cross-border research project jointly carried out by medicalvalues, the Center for Laboratory Medicine (ZLM) in St. Gallen, and Ravensburg-Weingarten University of Applied Sciences (RWU).

Cross-border research for more efficient genetic counseling

Advances in medical genetics are opening up new possibilities in diagnostics and therapy, but they also come with new challenges: long waiting times, complex documentation processes, and a growing shortage of specialized counselors.

The AI-OGC project aims to address exactly these issues. Together, medicalvalues, ZLM, and RWU are developing an AI-supported digital platform designed to make genetic counseling more efficient, secure, and accessible.

A digital cockpit for genetic counseling

At the core of the project is the development of a digital counseling cockpit, powered by AI, that enables safe, efficient, and patient-centered online genetic counseling.

The system is designed to digitally support the entire process, from genetic testing to consultation and documentation. The result is a solution that not only reduces the workload for professionals but also offers patients easier, barrier-free access to genetic counseling.

While medicalvalues develops the technical platform – including AI-driven analysis and visualization tools – the ZLM contributes clinical genetics expertise and access to real-world counseling cases. RWU complements the collaboration with research in communication and health psychology to scientifically evaluate the user experience and ensure the platform meets the needs of both clinicians and patients.

Funded through the Interreg VI Alpenrhein-Bodensee-Hochrhein program, the project positions the region as a pioneer in AI-supported telemedicine. By connecting digital innovation, research, and clinical practice, AI-OGC is creating an advanced solution that modernizes genetic counseling and expands access to precision medicine, especially in rural areas.

The Digital Cockpit for Online Genetic Counseling

The Online Genetic Counseling Cockpit (OGC) supports professionals throughout the entire counseling workflow from preparation, to consultation, and finally, follow-up.

It consolidates relevant patient information such as medical reports, lab results, and data from digital intake forms into one central, structured view. Key data points and clinically relevant findings are automatically highlighted.

During the consultation, additional notes can be added, ensuring all information remains contextually linked.

After the session, the system generates an AI-supported report based on all collected data – simplifying documentation and improving the overall quality and consistency of genetic counseling.

Outlook: Where AI meets precision medicine

With AI-OGC, a forward-thinking solution is emerging that has the potential to redefine genetic counseling – making it more efficient, more human, and more connected.

In the next project phases, the prototype will be tested with real patients and real counseling scenarios. The long-term goal: to extend the approach to additional indications and regions, shaping the future of precision medicine through intelligent digital tools.
